Game Days or How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love Incidents
"You built it; you run it!" is a core motto of DevOps culture. But how do you prepare developers for "running it"? In this talk, I share our experience planning and conducting Game Days for 51 engineers at Elli (Volkswagen Group), a fun, collaborative way to upskill engineers on incident handling and find holes in infrastructure and processes.
The GameDays uncovered 59 action items that improved our infrastructure and operations.
Five Things That Will Give You An Unfair Competitive Advantage
A talk for startup founders on engineering practices that create competitive advantage. The five things:
- Focus. Follow One Course Until Successful. Focus development on the core domain, minimize investment in supporting domains, don't build what you can buy.
- Be Customer Centric. Hire product-oriented engineers, involve them in product decisions, avoid the feature factory pattern.
- Empower Your Teams. Build cross-functional teams that can autonomously decide, design, and build end-to-end solutions.
- Don't Get Seduced By Technology. Nobody cares how you build it. Stick to boring tech. Chances are you don't need microservices, Kubernetes, or SPAs.
- Adopt Modern SW Engineering Practices. Trunk-based development, pairing & mobbing, DDD, CI/CD, IaC, TDD. The speed vs. quality tradeoff is a lie.
